If you’ve been feeling stuck when it comes to wanting to make money as a mom while still being available for your family, you’re not alone.

So many women have this drive to make money but we are in a world that tells us how it should be rather than encouraging us to look for answers outside the box. I have my own theories on why that is but that’s a topic for another day.

I want to give you the key questions to ask yourself to figure out the right path to income for you. Not for other people, not what you went to school for, not what your family thinks sounds normal. What works for your dream life situation.

The right questions force us to think differently, challenge our assumptions, and unlock new solutions we never considered.

So if you’re struggling with the right income generation path for you, take a moment to pause and ask yourself these powerful questions:

Focus Area 1 – Identify What That Desire or Yearning Really Is

To choose the income generation path you have to know what that true desire really is. So many people want to make money so they jump right into starting a business. But that is not the right answer for a lot of people.

Take a step back and ask yourself:

  • What is causing this fire inside me?
  • Is it to make an impact on others in an area where you see them struggling without hope?
  • Is it to make your family financially free and independent?
  • Or do you want to feel like you are contributing to your family and not feel like a leach on your husband’s paycheck? THAT was a tough one for me for a long time.

You might realize that your end goal doesn’t require a huge business but instead a simple side hustle buying and flipping stuff on eBay or Facebook marketplace.

Or maybe you want to earn an income but you don’t want the mental stress and hassle required. So a part-time job would be a perfect fit for you.

What to do next: Grab a piece of paper and get down what you are truly yearning for. Don’t let your current situation dictate the answer. You can make changes to fit your current reality in a little bit.

For my girls of faith, what is God calling you to? It may be something that makes no earthly sense. But if he is pushing you to do something so heavily that you can’t sleep at night or it’s burning a hole in your mind all day long. You need to find a way to take action on it. Even if it its only 20 minutes a day. Its still progress.

Focus Area 2 – Challenge the “Normal” Way of Doing Things

A lot of times, we follow what seems to be our only option. It’s what culture has told us our options are. But that doesn’t mean it’s the best way for you.

Instead, ask yourself:

What are my non-negotiables?

What are the things you are not willing to let go of or sacrifice in the pursuit of your goals?

For me, I know I am supposed to be a homeschool mom. So I have to find a way to make my business goals work around that.

This can feel really constraining. But solutions are found in constraints. When your brain knows the parameters it can find a solution that fits within the boundaries you set for it.

What to do next: Make a list of the things you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that are supposed to be a part of your life.

Focus Area 3 – Focus on What Actually Moves the Needle And Turn Off Outside Voices

It is so easy to focus on the things that make sense, are what the gurus say is the right thing, or just follow blindly what we can read online.

If you are like me and you are good at being a student this can be a dangerous space to be in. You think you will learn the right strategy or the next educator will have the answer.

If you stop consuming and start listening, you will find the right answer within your heart and soul.

No one knows your goals, business, or the people you are called to serve better than you do. My biggest mistake was trusting people who I thought knew better. But really they didn’t know what I knew.

To refocus, you may have to cut off the flood of loud noises filling your mind and ask yourself:

Does this noise fill that yearning or does it distract from what I am meant to do? If it doesn’t help you get there you likely need to remove it from speaking into your life.

It may be hard and it may feel like you are completely changing who you are in some cases. But it will allow that person you are becoming to fully show up and stop competing with everything else that doesn’t fulfill those goals.

What Moves The Needle

This is all based on what you want. You have to get super clear on what that income path is that you are going to TRY first. You may test out something and realize it’s not for you.

But go into it openly knowing that this may not be what you stick with. No matter what it is. People don’t get 100% hits all the time.

Here are a few questions to help you find the actions that move the needle.

  • Does this give me experience in what I want to try to do?
  • Does this cause me to ignore my non-nigoshibles.
  • Does this allow me to take action on my dream life progress and isn’t just making me SEEM like I am doing what gets me to my goals?

Different Income Paths For Different People

First I want to share that just because you are not working 60 hours a week outside the home, keeping a house and 3 kids alive, and making all the Pinterest-worthy crafts doesn’t mean you are any less of a woman.

You can do a lot but at what cost? Sleep? Health? Family? Is it worth it to you? If you are reading this post I could wager not.

Be ok with what you have the capacity for and do it to the best of your ability.

Here are some key areas that these different income streams need and if you don’t have those skill sets or have no desire to learn them. Then consider another way.

  • Part-time job – Working less hours and you can leave work at work.
  • Flipping products side hustle – You don’t have to make the product. You have to know what people want, find things with value, and know how to communicate that to the buyer.
  • Your own business no matter the size – You get much higher profit margins but you also pay a HEAVY mental tax and have to be self-driven. No one is going to guide you and tell you the right next move.

Part-Time Jobs – Working Fewer Hours & Leaving Work at Work

(Best for moms who want stable pay, minimal stress, and the ability to clock out when the job is done.)

  5. Remote Data Entry – Simple, repetitive work that involves entering information into spreadsheets or databases. No marketing or high-stakes decision-making required.
  6. Transcriptionist – Listen to audio recordings and type them into text. Companies like Rev and TranscribeMe offer work-from-home positions.
  7. Medical Coding/Billing – Requires training, but many hospitals and private practices hire remote workers to process insurance claims and medical records.
